When caring for your loved one that suffer’s from Alzheimer’s disease, everyday brings new challanges. As the disease progresses, there are several simple tips for ensuring for the safety and care of our loved ones who suffer from this debilitating disease.

- Make sure that the home is secured
- Change all inside door locks to non-locking to avoid becoming locked-in
- Remove all obstacles that could become a potential fall risk
- Keep medications, and other dangerous items where your loved one can’t reach them
- Secure all stoves and ovens with locking mechanisms
- Purchase an identification bracelet for your loved one to wear with all pertinent information
- Explore all new technology available for tracking . In home survellance is now readily available
- Use alarms on the doors to alert to doors opening
- Making bathing a calming and enjoyable experience when your loved one is most relaxed, usually earlier in the day
- Supervise and stand by assist your loved one in the shower or bathtub
- Install safety equipment such as grab bars, removable shower head, bench and non-slip pads for safety
- Make sure the temperature is comfortable, avoid making too hot or cold
- Be patient with your loved one and give him plenty of time to express himself
- Encourage your loved one’s to pursue their memories
- Use cue’s in conversation when they are at a loss for words
- When communicating with your loved one approach from the side, bending down to their level as a non threatening approach
- When the stresses of caring for your loved one becomes increasingly difficult, and in- home companion can help with respite care
