Mammogram Information Every Woman Should Know
According to the American Cancer Society, there are guidelines as to when a woman should get a mammogram. The guidelines are mainly based on the age of a woman. These guidelines state the following:
- Women aged 40 to 44 – It is recommended that these women get a mammogram every year.
- Women aged 45 – By the age of 45, women should definitely be getting a mammogram each year.
- Women aged 55+ – Women in this age group should get a yearly mammogram or get one at least every other year.
- Other information – Women who are in great health can get a mammogram every other year. In addition, those that have a family history of breast cancer should get tested more often.
It should be noted that the National Cancer Institute carries the same mammogram guidelines as those you have just read.
Guidelines Given by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force
There is also something known as the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force. This task force offers different recommendations. They believe women who are between 50 to 74 years of age would benefit from mammograms the most. However, they only recommend that women get a screening every other year.
In addition, this task force states that mammograms would be the most effective between 60 to 69 years of age. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force also believes that women who get a mammogram between 40 to 49 have a reduced risk of dying from breast cancer.
It has been noted, however, that women who have the BRCA gene or a family history of breast cancer should consult their doctor about how often they should get screened.
