July is Social Wellness Month
Social Wellness month was founded by the counseling group, Words of Wellness. Studies show that people who have a strong social network tend to live longer, manage stress better, and enhances the immune system’s ability to fight off illness. It’s the goal of Words of Wellness to increase national awareness of the power of social healing, and educate society how important social interaction improves one’s overall happiness and longtime well-being. Social wellness means nurturing yourself and your relationships. For seniors, staying socially active can be effective for improving mood and quality of life. Animals are a great source of companionship. Studies have shown that pet owners have lower blood pressure, healthier levels of cholesterol and triglycerides and promote social interaction. Try volunteering! Volunteering helps one feel useful and gives you a sense of purpose by helping others around you. Reconnecting with old friends or reaching out to develop new friendships are another good source of engagement. Find others who share a hobby or common interest, such as biking, hiking, running, gardening, etc. or join a gym. This keeps you engaged with others.
