Elderly Care Observances: National Mentoring Month
Elderly Care in Des Plaines IL
What have you learned during your elderly care journey with your aging parents? If you have been caring for them for longer than a few days, it is likely that you have learned a considerable amount, possibly more than you ever thought that you could learn just through stepping into the role of being their family caregiver as they age in place. Not only does everything that you learn on a daily basis as you care for your parents benefit you as their caregiver and ensure that you are able to give them the level of care and assistance that they need and deserve, but it also gives you the unique opportunity and perspective to be a benefit to those who are starting this journey behind you, enabling you to act as a beacon of hope for them so that they can see where they are going and that there is something ahead.
January is National Mentoring Month, an exceptional opportunity for you to take everything that you have learned throughout your elderly care journey with your aging parents, and everything that you are still learning, and put it to even more use by sharing it with those who are just getting started or who are a few steps behind you in their journey.
Let these tips inspire you to bring even more meaning to your care journey with your parents by reaching out to help others during National Mentoring Month and throughout the rest of the year:
• Start a blog. One of the fastest and simplest ways to share your thoughts and experiences with others, and encourage them to share theirs with you, is to start a blog. It does not matter if you have never written online before, or even at all. Today’s blog platforms are simple to use and allow you to quickly and easily design the look of your blog and input content so that readers can find you and explore through your adventures in caregiving. Use your blog as a journal or write posts on themes about caregiving. Do whatever works for you, but be sure to invite comments and engage with your readers so that all of you can learn from each other.
• Join a support group. A caregiver support group is a wonderful place for you to make new friends and bond over your shared experiences caring for elderly adults. It is also a fantastic place to share what you have learned and offer support, encouragement, and even advice to those who may be encountering similar things with their parents.
• Be honest. The most important thing that you can do when acting as a caregiving mentor for others is to be honest. Tell them about all of the feelings and emotions you have in your care journey, both positive and negative. Talk about everything that you have encountered from hiring an elderly health care services provider to realizing that you were less prepared than you thought you would be. Being willing to be open and honest with those who look to you for encouragement will make them feel safe and comfortable admitting their concerns and asking questions so that you and others can help them along.
