August 1st is celebrated as World Wide Web Day as that day in 1991 marked the birth of the World Wide Web and the availability of the internet to the public.  Though the world wide web and the internet are fairly new inventions, they have significantly changed the world in which we live in.  Many Americans today access the internet every day from their very own homes and many also access it on mobile devices.  The internet has revolutionized the way we shop, communicate, find information, get entertainment, and keep in touch with friends.  Due to the significant and rapid impact the internet has had on our daily lives, many elderly adults can possibly feel left out.  August 1st, World Wide Web Day, is a great day to help your elderly loved one use the internet and learn new skills that interest them.  Even though they didn’t grow up with computers and the internet, that doesn’t mean that they can’t use it to benefit them in their lives, too.  If your elderly loved one has an interest in learning more about the internet and the ways they can use it, consider helping them to learn how to do these useful tasks:

Sending an Email

Using email can be a very useful skill for elderly adults to learn.  When they know how to send and receive emails, they will be able to communicate more often with loved ones.  Unlike “snail mail”, emailing requires no postage costs or trips to the post office, which can certainly be a plus.  Help your loved one by guiding them through setting up an email account and writing their first few emails.  Once your loved one gets the hang of it, they just may find it to be a very useful skill when it comes to keeping in touch with loved ones who live near or far.

Searching

With internet access, there isn’t much need to have a physical phone book, newspaper subscription, or even a set of encyclopedias.  Most information you need is just a search away.  Using a search engine can be a very useful skill for your loved one to learn.  When they know how to search, they will be able to easily find things such as phone numbers for local businesses, information regarding medical conditions, and even fun things to do around town.  In addition, they can find more information about news, currents events, and the topics that interest them.
